eThekwini:The eThekwini Municipality has reported a noticeable decrease in the number of reported water leaks throughout the city, thanks to its accelerated service delivery intervention.
According to South African Government News Agency, this improvement is part of a broader initiative led by eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba. The programme aims to restore essential water and sanitation infrastructure, addressing longstanding issues with leaks and sewer blockages.
The municipality's strategy involves deploying technical response teams to tackle persistent problems in affected areas. Since the programme's inception two months ago, the number of reported water leaks has fallen significantly, from 13,000 to 3,900.
Mayor Xaba recently inspected water and sanitation infrastructure in uMlazi Wards 80, 81, and 88. During his visit, he observed repairs to water leaks and efforts to clear severe sewer blockages. Xaba emphasized the importance of systemic maintenance to prevent future issues and safeguard residents' dignity and environmental health.
He highlighted the misuse of public infrastructure as a key factor in recurring sewer blockages and urged residents to refrain from disposing of foreign objects in sewer manholes. Additionally, Xaba called on residents to report illegal water connections, which contribute to the strain on existing infrastructure.
