Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome says the Reppie Waste-to-Energy Project being built on the outskirts of Addis Ababa is a showcase of the commitment of the country to achieve the development of a Green Economy.

After visiting the progress of work on project with senior officials Thursday, the president said the government was working to make its industrialization programme free from environmental pollution as pledged to the people.

The nation has thus been generating energy from renewable resources, including wind, geo-thermal, hydro-power, solar and dry waste under an initiative which would have a vital role in accelerating the industrialization of the country, he added.

According to the president, apart from electricity from wastes, the Reppie Waste-to-Energy Project would also contribute towards solving the current challenges of waste disposal in the Ethiopian capital.

He further indicated the importance of adapting such waste management projects in other cities of the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ethiopian Electric Power, Azeb Asnake, said the project would play an essential role in managing waste in addition to providing electricity to the capital.

Some 90 per cent of the project had been completed, she said, adding that it was expected to be ready by the middle of 2017. The project, which costs 95.9 million US dollars, will have the capacity to generate 50 megawatts (MW).

China National Electric Engineering Corporation and Cambridge Industry Ltd is carrying out the construction of the project.
