Five robbers nabbed after high-speed chase in KwaNobuhle following Kamesh business robbery

UITENHAGE – Police arrested five men and seized a getaway vehicle, an air gun, a cap gun and airtime machine after a supermarket was robbed in Kamesh (Uitenhage) today.

On Sunday, 03 May 2020 around 10:45am, it is alleged that three men, one armed with a rifle stormed into a supermarket in A.Tambo Crescent, Mandela Ville in Kamesh (Uitenhage).   It is said that a suspect with a rifle held the two shop assistants at gunpoint, while others ransacked the store.  Suspects made off with undisclosed amount of cash, an airtime machine and a Nokia cellphone before fleeing the scene in a beige Toyota Corolla.

Police quickly responded to a complaint of business robbery and obtained a description of a getaway vehicle with suspects who were allegedly involved in a robbery and circulated the information in all police communication radio channels.  Moments later the police spotted a vehicle fitting the description driving at high speed in Melbrooks Street in Uitenhage and gave chase. The vehicle was cornered and stopped at Nomakhwezana Street in KwaNobuhle (Uitenhage). Inside the vehicle, police found an air gun (rifle), a cap gun, six cellphones and a backpack with cash and airtime machine.  The five occupants in the vehicle were arrested.  The five men all aged 23 are due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Monday, 04 May 2020) on charges of business robbery and a second charge of contravening the Disaster Management Act.

Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll lauded the members for the good work and said, “A swift and prompt police reaction resulted in the arrests and recovery of stolen goods. Your efforts are not going unnoticed”, added Brig Koll
