Patrolling of known cable theft and robbery hot spots by members of Rondebosch SAPS led to the arrest of five male suspects aged between 18 and 38 on charges of possession of presumed stolen property and possession dangerous weapons and vehicle breaking implements.

On 2019-01-05 at approximately 08:15, Rondebosch SAPS members were doing crime prevention along the railway line in Rondebosch, a known cable theft hotspot. The members noticed three suspiciously acting males and stopped and searched them.

The suspects were searched and found in possession of two hacksaws and a large amount of copper cable. Two suspects aged 18 and one aged 38 were detained on charges of possession of presumed stolen property.

The 38-year-old suspect was also positively linked to a defeating the course of justice case at Lansdowne SAPS and a housebreaking and theft case at Claremont SAPS.

On 2019-01-06 at 13:10 members of Rondebosch SAPS stopped and searched two suspicious males in a robbery hotspot along the Liesbeek River Trail. Both males were found in possession of knives and vehicle breaking implements.

The suspects, two males, aged 30 and 37 were arrested and detained on charges of possession of dangerous weapons and vehicle breaking implements.

The 30-year-old suspect was also positively linked to a Langa SAPS drunk and driving case.

During investigations it was discovered that both suspects had given false names at the time of their arrest. The 30-year-old suspect had given the other suspect’s name and the 37-year-old suspect had made up another name. The two suspects will also be charged with defeating the course of justice.

The investigation continues in identifying ownership of the confiscated items.

All suspects will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court once they have been charged.
