Former Elgablox Project Manager in court for fraud worth R4,7 Million

WESTERN CAPE A 65-year-old has been arrested by the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for fraud worth over R4.7 million.

The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) allocated funds for the upgrading following an application to upgrade the Ray Alexander Simons Memory Centre buildings in Gugulethu. Over R13.05 million was approved as financial assistance for the project, however an initial payment of R6.8 million was transferred to Elgablox to kick-start the renovations.

The former Project Manager at Elgablox, allegedly misappropriated the funds by making transfers to persons and or entities that were not related to the upgrading of the Ray Alexander Simons Memory Centre buildings in Gugulethu. These transactions were carried out over a period between 23 March and 02 May 2014.

The matter was reported to the Hawks for further investigation after DAC received allegations of embezzlement of the allocated funds. The arrested suspect in this matter is expected to appear at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Bellville on 25 October 2019.
