Former Home Affairs Employee Convicted of Fraud and Corruption

Durban:A former Home Affairs employee has been found guilty on multiple charges related to corruption, fraud, and violations of immigration laws and will return to court in November 2026 for a pre-sentencing report, as reported by the Hawks.

According to South African Government News Agency, the 34-year-old was convicted on October 1, 2026, at the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in KwaZulu-Natal. The charges included 66 counts each of fraud, corruption, contravention of the Immigration Act, and contravention of the Identification Act.

The charges stem from activities between February 2022 and July 2023, where a group of South African citizens allegedly assisted foreign nationals in fraudulently acquiring South African passports. These activities occurred at a Department of Home Affairs office in Pietermaritzburg.

The fraudulent operations were carried out outside of regular business hours, during evenings, weekends, and public holidays, when the DHA offices were officially closed. This led to the case being investigated by the Serious Corruption Investigation Unit.

The accused has remained in custody since his arrest and is scheduled to appear in court again on November 13, 2026.
