Freedom Park has launched an International Storytelling Festival aimed at bringing together arts and culture practitioners and academics together for knowledge sharing.
At the launch, Acting Freedom Park CEO Jane Mufamadi led a panel of academics, professionals and storytellers.
The panel explained how storytelling is believed to be the oldest art of practice in Africa and how it links the past and the present and in the process informs the future.
Freedom Park said the festival is also aimed at ensuring that people gain an understanding of storytelling as a tool for social cohesion and social development.
The launch was attended by storytelling practitioners, supporters, academics in the field of folklore language and culture, students, relevant professionals, teachers and leaners and the public.
Freedom Park is a national and international site that celebrates the ideals of liberty, diversity and human rights. It is also a cultural institution housing a museum and memorial dedicated to chronicling and honouring the people who contributed to South Africa’s liberation.
