Pretoria: The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that it has provided the necessary funds to all schools for payment of their respective municipal billing accounts. In a statement on Thursday, the provincial department said the funds were transferred to the accounts of all identified schools in June 2025. According to South African Government News Agency, the Department reiterated that, in line with legislation, schools with Section 21 functions are responsible for managing their own finances. These schools handle a range of operations, including paying for municipal services such as electricity and water. Once the funds are transferred, schools and their respective School Governing Body (SGB) are responsible for ensuring that municipal accounts are settled and paid on time to prevent service disruptions. The GDE not only allocates funds but also offers oversight and support to these schools. Previously, the department settled outstanding accounts on behalf of schools in April 2025. It also provides financial management training to schools and SGBs to emphasize the importance of compliance with financial processes. The department is committed to maintaining a conducive learning environment and works with school leadership to ensure sound financial governance and uninterrupted access to basic services. Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane assured that no public school in Gauteng will face disconnection from water and electricity services. Schools must collaborate with the GDE to ensure municipal accounts are current and comply with necessary procedures. The MEC urged parents, communities, and stakeholders to support schools and their SGBs in fulfilling their duties to benefit learners, educators, and school-based staff.
