Gauteng Legislature hosts sector parliament for people with disabilities

Gauteng Legislature following up on its commitment to people with disabilities

In celebration of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) during the month of December 2016, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) will tomorrow convene its annual PwD’s Sector Parliament. GPL convenes sector parliaments annually targetting various stakeholder categories, as one of the public participation initiatives in response to section 118 of the Constitution.

Noting that the majority of Persons with Disabilities in South Africa have been excluded from the mainstream society and struggle to access fundamental social, political and economic rights; the focus for this year’s sector parliament will be on highlighting the role of government and civil society in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities and ensuring that this sector plays an active role in the legislative and decision making processes of the GPL. The Sector Parliament will afford a platform to this sector of society to engage their elected public representatives on:

The removal of unfair barriers to access and participation.

Improving the economic lives of persons with disabilities

The implementation of the New White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Education and disability
