Gauteng Police arrest more than 1100 suspects and seize 21 illegal firearms over the weekend

The intensified Safer Festive Season Operations in Gauteng resulted to the arrest of more than 1100 people and the recovery of 21 illegal firearms. Out of those arrested, more than 130 were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Two days before Christmas day, Gauteng police are still sending a strong warning to those who continue to undermine the rule of law and that law enforecment will not have mercy with those who drink and drive.

People of Gauteng should expect more road blocks and stop and searches as well as raiding of liquor outlets. More police officers will be deployed at the shopping malls, highways and taxi ranks to prevent road fatalities due to drunkenness and to avert robberies.

One hundred and forty three (143) suspects were arrested in Ekurhuleni for crimes ranging from dealing in drugs, rape, truck hijacking, possession of suspected stolen vehicle, dealing in dagga, driving under the influence of alcohol and assault.

More than one hundred and thirteen (113) suspects were nabbed by the police in Tshwane for committing crimes such as business burglary, possession of suspected stolen property, robbery, kidnapping and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Operations also took place in Soweto and West Rand whereby more than one hundred and forty eighty (148) suspects were arrested for armed robbery, murder, assault, business robbery, house breaking, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of drugs, amongst other crimes.

Other suspects were arrested in other parts of Gauteng for various crimes.

All arrested suspects will appear before different magistrate courts in Gauteng in due course.
