Over the long weekend crime prevention operations resulted in one hundred and thirty-one (131) arrests out of more than 1000 people were effected for drug related crimes that includes cocaine powder, crystal meth, heroine, mandrax, dagga and nyaope. Commercial explosives, firearms and ammunition, stolen vehicles and other stolen goods were seized. Arrested people are expected to appear at the various Magistrates’ Courts today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) for charges of murder, attempted murder, assault with grievous bodily harm, rape and sexual assaults, malicious damage to property, possession of drugs, possession of firearms and ammunition and other crimes.

Police and other Gauteng law enforcement agencies conducted several roadblocks, stop and search operations, raids and execution of warrants of arrests in all areas of Gauteng. During these roadblocks vehicles and people entering and leaving Gauteng were stopped and searched. These operations resulted in the seizure of the following:

Seven (7) stolen vehicles

10 handguns, 3 shotguns and one rifle

109 live ammunition for different calibre of firearm

10 commercial explosives suspected to be used for illegal mining and other serious and violent crimes

700 people were arrested for contact crimes including murders, armed robberies, assault with grievous bodily harm, rape and sexual assaults. Other arrests were effected for housebreaking and theft, possession of stolen goods, possession of illegal firearms, illegal dealing in liqour, illegal immigration and possession of explosives and outstanding warrants of arrests. More than 400 people were arrested for traffic laws including driving under the influence of liqour and other violations.

The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Deliwe de Lange applauds the active participation of the members of the public who contributed to the arrest of people involved in criminal activities during the past long weekend. Members of the public are also urged to continue to report any suspicious people and vehicles.
