Gauteng police recover over ten firearms within 24 hours

PARKTOWN – Gauteng police together with other law enforcement agencies’ effort to recover illegal weapons used in the commission of serious and violent crime proves to be successful as more than ten illegal firearms and over 200 ammunition of different calibres were recovered within the last 24 hours. This include three unlicensed firearms that were recovered during the raid and the arrest of four suspects who were wanted for serious and violent crime by Tshwane TRT, Ekurhuleni TRT and Gauteng Traffic after they were following up on information on Thursday, 11 March 2021 in Atteridgeville.

In another incident, on Thursday night, 11 March 2021, members from Boksburg SAPS Crime Prevention unit recovered two unlicensed firearms, in a taxi and arrested three suspects during a stop and search operation.

Meanwhile, in Ekurhuleni police followed up on information of a man driving a Toyota Corolla and in possession of unlicensed firearms. The man was observed entering into a car with the same description, and police intercepted the vehicle and found him in possession of two unlicensed firearms and a toy gun. Further investigation positively linked the Toyota Corolla of the suspect with a motor theft case reported at Tembisa police station. Furthermore, two unlicensed firearms were recovered during the arrest of three suspects in Johannesburg. In addition, one shotgun was recovered in Diepkloof Zone 4 by metro police officials and three suspects were arrested for truck hijacking on the N3-highway. The suspects were found offloading the truck in Langlaagte last night.

The Deputy Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng, Major General Tommy Mthombeni and the District Commissioner of West Rand Major General Fred Kekana led operation O Kae Molao in Bekkersdal on Thursday, 11 March 2021 where they were joined by provincial SAPS management and senior officers from both the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies. During the operation police closed down five liquor outlets in Bekkersdal and over 35 suspects were arrested by the detectives for various serious and violent crimes in the area.

At the roadblocks, more than 40 illegal immigrants were apprehended for the contravention of the Illegal Immigrants Act.

A total of 946 suspects were arrested in the other four Districts in Gauteng for various crimes, including closing of liquor outlets and serious and violent crime.
