Pretoria: Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Dr. Nomalungelo Gina will on Tuesday visit the University of Limpopo Centre for Global Change (UL-CGC), a research hub advancing sustainability, climate resilience, and global change research in South Africa. The UL-CGC, under the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF), is crucial in enhancing research capabilities and supporting socio-economic development, especially in rural areas.

According to South African Government News Agency, the visit coincides with the conclusion of the inaugural National Science Month by the DSTI, emphasizing the role of science, technology, and innovation in sustainable development and addressing national challenges. The UL-CGC, established under the DSTI's Global Change Grand Challenge, aims to enhance scientific understanding of global change and develop innovative solutions to environmental and societal issues.

The initiative addresses challenges posed by climate change and global environmental changes that threaten water resources, biodiversity, food security, human health, and livelihoods. The centre conducts locally relevant research to advance scientific knowledge and create solutions that enhance ecosystem and community resilience.

Launched in 2012 with the universities of Fort Hare, Limpopo, and Walter Sisulu, the programme has expanded to include the universities of the Free State's Qwaqwa Campus, North West, Sol Plaatje, Venda, and Zululand, forming a network of eight universities. Deputy Minister Gina will engage with university leadership, researchers, students, and stakeholders, including local farmers and municipalities, to understand the centre's research impact and explore ways to strengthen its work.
