Sharpeville: The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) has started the provincial rollout of the Milestones of Freedom campaign, initiated nationally by President Cyril Ramaphosa on June 18, 2026. This campaign aims to foster social cohesion, instill national pride, and reflect on South Africa's democratic progress by commemorating significant national milestones.

According to South African Government News Agency, the campaign highlights the 30th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption, the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising, the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Women's March against pass laws, and the 60th anniversary of the forced removals from District Six. Provincial launches are being organized by the GCIS in collaboration with the Offices of the Premier, Departments of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sport, Arts and Culture, and local municipalities to engage communities more directly.

The inaugural provincial event occurred in Sharpeville, Gauteng, on July 26, 2026, featuring a memorial lecture on South Africa's Constitution's 30th anniversary. Sharpeville was chosen for its historical relevance as a symbol of reflection in the fight against apartheid. The campaign will continue throughout the year, with provincial events scheduled until February 2027.

The August 2025 provincial launch schedule includes events in KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North-West, with specific dates and locations detailed. The government encourages community participation in these activities to enhance understanding of South Africa's history and appreciation of its democratic journey.
