Government Supports Youth-Led Spa at Addo National Park

Addo:In alignment with its commitment to driving economic transformation and expanding inclusion within key sectors, the Department of Tourism, in conjunction with the National Empowerment Fund, has backed the establishment of a new wellness facility at Addo Elephant National Park.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Epitome Spa & Wellness Centre has created sustainable employment opportunities for local communities while promoting tourism to the national park in the Eastern Cape. This initiative has been spearheaded by Lucia Ratshivhadelo, an industry specialist who has turned her university qualifications into a commercial enterprise situated in one of the country's flagship conservation zones.

The spa, entirely owned and operated by young black female leadership, accounts for 36 employment opportunities, including 20 short-term construction positions and 16 permanent operational roles. The project received financial support through a joint initiative between the National Empowerment Fund and the Tourism Transformation Fund, allowing construction to conclude ahead of the summer season.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Maggie Sotyu emphasized the importance of translating tourism growth into opportunities for South Africans. The sector has seen continuous growth, with approximately 7.5 million international tourists visiting the country between January and August this year. Sotyu highlighted that the Epitome Spa & Wellness Centre exemplifies how supporting black women and young entrepreneurs can facilitate employment and create new experiences for visitors.

NEF Chief Executive Officer, Mziwabantu Dayimani, noted the significance of strategic funding in transitioning technical competence into commercial ownership. He pointed out that while South Africa has talented individuals with the expertise to build successful businesses, access to capital often remains a barrier. Dayimani praised Ratshivhadelo's journey, illustrating the potential that arises when such barriers are addressed.

Lucia Ratshivhadelo, who holds a B.Tech in Pharmaceutical Science, shared her journey toward becoming a wellness business owner. She expressed her desire to create a business that combines professional wellness services with an exceptional guest experience, while also providing employment opportunities for others. Ratshivhadelo hopes her success encourages other young women to believe in their abilities and pursue entrepreneurial ambitions.
