Delivering on the new administrations’ commitment to the informal trading industry, the Green Point Market had a historic relaunch at the P4 parking lot of Cape Town Stadium late last year.

‘After identifying unintended consequences and unhappiness from traders around operations, the Urban Management Directorate committed to working hard to seeking solutions. I made a commitment to the traders to ensure open engagement and proactive actions to find a solution to the concerns raised, in good faith,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.

Together with Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, we identified the Old Bowling Green in Green Point as a possible home for the market. The site was piloted on Sunday 26 January 2020, to help mitigate disruptions to market days.

‘The new market site was a hive of activity. The traders also expressed their happiness and appreciation that the City has come up with this alternative venue. I am optimistic about the future of this incredible market and what it holds for the informal economy,’ said Alderman Twigg.

The Urban Management Directorate has committed to establishing an innovative Informal Markets Framework. This will ensure we have an integrated approach to unlocking the informal economy and its multi-million rand potential for the city.

‘We will now engage transversally with the relevant departments and officials to secure this space as the home of the Green Point Market,’ added Alderman Twigg.

Together we are making a great city even greater for all residents.
