Hawks nets alleged roadworthy certificates fraudsters in Butterworth

WESTERN CAPE – Two suspects aged 43 and 44 were traced and arrested on Monday, 08 March 2021 for fraud and corruption in connection with roadworthy certificates syndicate.

Another suspect linked to this matter is still outstanding whilst the fourth reportedly passed on.

The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Team has implicated the syndicate to the processing of fraudulent vehicle roadworthy certificates.

These vehicles belonging to Western Cape based owners were reportedly exempted from being physically tested at the testing station in Butterworth Roadworthy Testing Station in exchange for gratification. The duo is expected to appear at the Bellville Regional Court on 14 April 2021.

Previously, six suspects were arrested in Cape Town, Butterworth and Queenstown between September and October 2018 respectively. They were each released on bail upon their separate court appearances.

Furthermore, the court ordered the implicated examiners and admin clerks to be barred from accessing the testing stations systems and nor to come near any vehicle testing station.

Further investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation together with Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works has now clinched eight (8) members of the syndicate following the latest arrest on Monday. More arrests can be expected pending the on-going investigation.
