Hijackers apprehended in Browns Farm, Nyanga

WESTERN CAPE In our efforts to prevent the scourge of hijackings directed at e-hailing drivers, police members arrested two teenage suspects last night (2020-02-03) for being in possession of a vehicle that was hijacked during the day in Emazotsheni Street, Browns Farm, Nyanga. According to reports, a client had requested for e-hailing services from Claremont to Emazotsheni Street. The driver arrived in a Ford Figo vehicle and while he interacted with the client, the two suspects got inside the vehicle. One of the suspects grabbed the car keys and chocked the driver while the other robbed him of his personal belongings which included a cellular telephone, watch, wallet with an undisclosed amount of cash, driver’s licence and bank cards. The driver was pushed out of the vehicle and the suspects drove away with the car. A case of hijacking was opened for investigation.

Later that night, members who had been strategically deployed in the area to prevent these hijackings from taking place spotted the Ford Figo with four occupants in Siyanyanzela Informal Settlement. The members arrested two suspects while the other two managed to evade arrest, and are being sought. Further investigations to determine links with other cases in the same vicinity will be conducted.

The two suspects, both aged 17 are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court tomorrow for the possession of a hijacked vehicle.
