Hijacking suspect nabbed with firearm

DURBAN Yesterday police officers from the Provincial Task Team police were following up on a vehicle that was hijacked in the Bhekithemba policing area on 6 December 2019 when they spotted the vehicle at H section in Umlazi.

Police instructed the driver to stop but he sped off and shot at the police officers. Police gave chase and the suspect lost control of the vehicle during the chase. The suspect was immediately searched and arrested. A firearm with 10 rounds of ammunition and the victim’s cellphone were seized by police officers.

The firearm had its serial number filed off. The suspect was detained at the Umlazi police station. He will be charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as carjacking. He will appear in the Umlazi Magistrates Court on 9 December 2019.

The swift reaction by these police officers is applauded. Criminals must be aware that we remain determined in our obligation to protect the citizens of this province and we will not allow criminals to roam freely in our neighbourhoods, said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
