House robbery suspects arrested: Port Elizabeth

PORT ELIZABETH – A total of five robbery suspects were arrested in separate incidents in Bethelsdorp and Walmer over the weekend. 

In the first incident, it is alleged that on Saturday, 02 May 2020 at approximately 17:30, a shop in G-West Walmer location was allegedly robbed by six suspects. The complainant (25) was in the shop when the masked men entered the shop. Two of the suspects went behind the counter and pointed the complainant with a firearm and a knife. They demanded cash. 

The suspects fled with airtime, 3 x cell phones, chips, cash and a speaker. The complainant sustained minor cuts to his fingers. Soon after the suspects fled, the complainant alerted a local community member and with their assistance, three suspects aged between 19 and 35 were arrested while the other suspect ran away. A knife, 2 x toy guns, chips, 3 x cell phones and sim cards were confiscated.

In another unrelated incident on Saturday, 02 May 2020 at approximately 04:30, the complainant (46) and her daughter (20) were alone at home in Chatty.  The complainant woke up when she heard footsteps in her yard she immediately woke her daughter.  The front door was forced open and two suspects entered.  The suspects were armed with firearms and threatened the complainant and her daughter while demanding cash.  They took cell phones, a handbag with perfume and a laptop bag with labour law books. A Dexion 42inch TV was also taken during the robbery.

While on the scene members followed up on information received and two suspects both 20 years old were arrested. The TV and the laptop bag with books were recovered.

All suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate court on Monday on charges of house robbery and the contravention of the Disaster Management Act for not being confined to their place of residence
