Housebreaking accused sentenced to eight years in prison

KING WILLIAM’S TOWN – The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has welcomed the sentencing of a 31-year-old accused who broke into the detective offices at SAPS Mount Road between 26 and 27 August 2019.

On the mentioned dates, Bjorn Burgeon broke into three offices on the 6th floor at SAPS Mount Road and stole three laptops. A week after the incident, in September 2019, he was arrested on the street in Korsten by Mount Road detectives. One laptop was recovered at a house in Shauderville while it is alleged that the other two laptops were sold to unknown persons and still to be recovered.

On 19 February 2020, he was sentenced in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court to 8 years imprisonment suspended for 4 years. He will serve an effective 4 years in prison. Burgeon remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.

Lieutenant General Ntshinga stated that criminals who are so daring to break into government buildings especially a police station must know that we, the SAPS would not rest until they are caught. ‘By stealing from government offices means that service to the community is affected. We appeal to the communities to report those people who buy or sell suspected stolen property,’ added Lt Gen Ntshinga.
