Human Settlements Department Launches Student Rental Rights Campaign

Nelspruit:The Department of Human Settlements is launching its 'Know Your Rental Rights: Student Edition' campaign at universities across the country to educate students on their rental rights and responsibilities.

According to South African Government News Agency, this national awareness initiative, in collaboration with Rental Housing Tribunals, will run from 6 to 16 October 2026. It aims to provide students with essential information on rental rights, landlord and tenant responsibilities, and free dispute resolution services in all nine provinces.

This effort is part of a broader program addressing challenges faced by students in private accommodation, including unfair rental practices, unlawful evictions, and disputes with landlords. The department has noted cases where landlords exploit student tenants and instances where students fail to meet their rental obligations despite receiving financial aid.

The campaign involves partnerships with NSFAS, the South African Union of Students, and the South African Technical and Vocational Education and Training Students Association. Activities will include presentations, information sessions, exhibitions, and direct engagement with Rental Housing Tribunal officials, allowing students to learn about their rights and available dispute resolution mechanisms.

The campaign follows a commitment by Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane in her 2026 Budget Vote speech to empower student tenants and landlords. The Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements and the National Student Accommodation Indaba have both emphasized the need for increased awareness of rental rights and services.

The first event will be at the University of Mpumalanga's Nelspruit Campus, with subsequent sessions at the University of the Free State, Walter Sisulu University, and King Sabata Dalindyebo TVET College. This initiative seeks to enhance collaboration with student organizations and institutions, ensuring fair rental practices and understanding of tenant and landlord obligations.
