Cape town: The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) has condemned the false allegations circulated on social media platforms, insinuating that IDAC is deliberately targeting South African Police Service (SAPS) senior officials. This follows the arrest of 12 senior police officers and summons being served to the National Police Commissioner, in relation to an alleged irregular contract that was awarded by the SAPS to Medicare 24, a company owned by Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, who is also an accused in the matter.
According to South African Government News Agency, the NPA emphasized that the case was referred to IDAC in 2024 after suspicions of irregularities were discovered by the SAPS Risk Audit Unit. IDAC highlighted that certain societal formations and individuals irresponsibly propagated a narrative linking the arrests to submissions at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and the Parliament Ad Hoc Committee. These bodies were set to investigate allegations made by the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, on June 6, 2025.
IDAC affirmed its respect for the commission and committee's work, committing to adhere to their future recommendations. It urged the public to remain vigilant against false narratives that undermine anti-corruption efforts. IDAC also raised concerns about the potential risks these baseless speculations pose to officials and their families involved in complex cases.
The agency reiterated its commitment to investigating and prosecuting without fear, favour, or prejudice, emphasizing that all actions taken followed legal due process. IDAC addressed criticisms regarding the exclusion of other individuals from charges, stating that decisions were made based on available evidence and jurisdictional constraints. The agency assured that any matters referred from the Madlanga Commission would be addressed appropriately.
IDAC concluded by reaffirming its legal adherence in the Medicare 24 matter and other cases, asserting its dedication to preventing crime and fulfilling its constitutional mandate effectively.
