Illegal Miners Sentenced to Six Months in Vhembe District

Vhembe: Two illegal miners in the Vhembe District have been sentenced to six months imprisonment by the Dzanani Magistrate's Court in Limpopo. The verdict has been positively received by law enforcement authorities.

According to South African Police Service, the Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed satisfaction with the conviction and sentencing handed down on Tuesday, 11 March 2025. The court heard that on Monday, 03 March 2025, at approximately 07:30, the two accused, both aged 40 years, were caught by members of the Vala Umgodi multidisciplinary team while mining illegally at a site in Tshituni (Nzhelele) Village, located in the Mphephu policing area.

The suspects were immediately apprehended, and items such as shovels and a pick with a handle were confiscated from the scene. The Dzanani Magistrate's Court subsequently convicted and sentenced the two individuals.

Langa Mduduzi, aged 40, received a six-month imprisonment sentence without the option of a fine. Similarly, Mupfiga John, also aged 40, was sentenced to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Lieutenant General Hadebe commended the efforts of the investigating officer and the arresting team members of Vala Umgodi Operations, acknowledging their dedication in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
