Israeli police force shut Jerusalem shops following attack

Israeli police on Monday forced shops in East Jerusalem’s main commercial area to shut down following an attack outside Herod’s Gate, according to shop owners.

Police shot and critically injured Ayman Kurd, 20, after he attacked and stabbed two other officers. Kurd is from Ras el Amoud neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

Shop owners on three main commercial roads – Salah Eddin, Sultan Suleiman and Haroun al-Rashid – told WAFA that police ordered them to shut down their businesses apparently as a collective punishment following the stabbing incident, the second in Jerusalem since Friday.

The police had shut down the main gates to the old city of Jerusalem, including Herod’s Gate were the attack took place and which is located at the corner of the three commercial roads.

The gates were later reopened but the shops were told to remain closed until further notice.
