The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has commenced with the construction of the Makhaza Public Transport Interchange at the corner of Nyanda and Geoff Masemola Roads in Khayelitsha. The work commenced on 11 January 2022 and is progressing well.

The construction is scheduled to take approximately nine months to complete, pending unforeseen delays and inclement weather.

The facility will be approximately 4 800m2 and will accommodate a number of minibus-taxis.

The facility will comprise the following:

• a building with ablutions, refuse storage, etc.

• a covered taxi rank with seating for commuters

• green principles like rainwater harvesting, solar panels and LED lights are included in the design

• related civil, mechanical, electrical and landscaping works

• ‘I am happy to see this project progressing. A large number of our residents rely on mini-bus taxis for their daily commute – be it to work, school, medical services or just social visits. Thus, we want to ensure that they do so from a more secure place, protected from harsh weather conditions while waiting for a taxi. The lanes will ensure that the taxis move with ease and in an orderly manner,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Makhaza residents can look forward to experiencing all of this for themselves in their own area once we are done with this amazing project. In the end, it is all about creating spaces for commuters and operators that are safe and dignified because we care about our residents,’ said Councillor Quintas.
