Justice Navi Pillay Receives Nobel Peace Prize for Contributions to International Law

Jakarta:President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his congratulations to Justice Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay, a distinguished South African jurist, on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her significant efforts in promoting peace and international law.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Pillay for her substantial role in strengthening international law and ensuring accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The committee praised her as a person of exceptional courage and integrity who has been pivotal in advancing a comprehensive legal order.

President Ramaphosa highlighted that Justice Pillay's achievement allows South Africa to celebrate her progressive contributions to peace, human dignity, and global hope. He commended her service to humanity with principle and a belief in a better world. Justice Pillay's legal career is notable for her work as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice, particularly in the genocide case of The Gambia v Myanmar, and as a pioneering defense attorney for anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela.

Pillay's distinguished career includes serving as a judge and President of the Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a judge of the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of building a society where everyone can realize their potential and contribute meaningfully, noting Justice Pillay's place among other illustrious South Africans who have made significant impacts on peace and justice.

The President expressed pride in Justice Pillay joining the ranks of Chief Albert Luthuli, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, President Mandela, and Former President FW de Klerk, highlighting the global influence of South Africans. He conveyed best wishes to Justice Pillay as she continues to advocate for the rights and dignity of all people.
