10 more years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) world blue print for fair globalization 2030 and the marking of 2020 as the Decade for Action, remains our best hope for the People, for the Planet, for Peace and Partnerships.
UNIC Pretoria in partnership with the Wildlife Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) engaged and interacted with visiting students from Baruch College (City University of New York) for the SDG classroom and beyond at UNIC Library on the 14 January 2020 to kick start the call for the DECADE OF ACTION.
Following the students needs, interest and aspirations during their study tour to South Africa to learn and understand the local economic situation, sustainability, generosity and innovation in the business sector, UNIC Pretoria and WESSA met their needs by organizing the SDG classroom and beyond where students were introduced to SDGs (World Largest Lesson Emma Watson Introduction video); from ending poverty and hunger; protecting the planet and its biodiversity; to ensuring human rights and dignity for everyone. With UNIC and WESSA team support, students worked in groups on the board games, crossword puzzles and canvas paintings to express their feelings and understanding of SDGs.
As part of commitment to being CHANGE MAKERS, students in their own rights organized themselves to cleaning up Jubilee park in Sunnyside, Pretoria, a popular spot for students and the public in the inner city for leisure and free access to WIFI. This ACTION, by visiting students to commit to a better world united by the call, For the People, For Planet left a positive impact on the people in the park who were so touched to see the foreign students cleaning the park.
The cleanup of the park triggered a positive outcome where people were informed about the SDGs creating awareness of the global agenda by ensuring that nobody is by self, commitment, collectively, locally and globally, left behind.
After the cleanup, the visitors invited the young boys who were in the park to a friendly casual football game that brought a lot of excitement and left a positive impression to the people in and around the park.
