Liquor traders urged to comply with Liquor Act and relevant by-laws

KING WILLIAM’S TOWN- Humansdorp Cluster Commander has issued a stern warning to liquor traders that they must comply with the Liquor Act and the relevant by-laws. Failure to adhere to the regulations can result in liquor outlets being closed down. This warning by the Cluster Commander follows operations that were held simultaneously in four police station precincts yesterday, in preparation for Safer Festive Season Operation that is planned for the Humansdorp Cluster.

On Thursday, 14 November 2019, police held several operations in four police precincts namely, Jeffreys Bay, Joubertina, Hankey and Patensie, which are some of the nine police stations making up for the Humansdorp Cluster. The aim of these operations was two-fold that aim to ensure that liquor outlets were complying with the Liquor Act and municipal by-laws, and also to gauge the level of readiness of various stakeholders. In Jeffreys Bay, a 51-year-old man was fined an amount of R 2 000 for trading in liquor without a valid license while police also seized 297.9 litres of liquor from the premises. All taverns that were visited during the compliance inspections were found to be adhering to their license conditions.

Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier John Lebok said, We are going to be monitoring taverns very closely, as consumption of liquor increases during the Festive Season, resulting in vulnerability on patrons. Police are going to have a zero tolerance approach, and residents are urged to cooperate, as the objective is to create safer communities through law enforcement, added Brig Lebok.
