Long sought suspect arrested for allegations of murder

EASTERN CAPE – The arrest of a 40-year-old suspect by the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes team in Gqeberha brought a relief to the Provincial Head, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya. The suspect was arrested in Markman, Gqeberha on 21 June 2022 for allegations of attempted murder, murder and armed robbery.

On 19 March 2021, police received information about a group of men travelling in two vehicles on the way to hijack and rob a courier vehicle carrying commercial goods. The police spotted the vehicles in Peddie area and gave chase. A shootout ensued between the suspects and the police while suspects were fleeing in their vehicles.

One suspect fell off the back of a Ford Ranger bakkie they were using and was declared dead. Another suspect was arrested on the spot and one suspect fled the scene hence his arrest on 21 June 2022 after police received information on his whereabouts.

He is expected to make his first court appearance in the Port Alfred Magistrates’ Court on 23 June 2022.
