Johannesburg: The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, also known as the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, has welcomed the arrest of a suspect in the murder of a key witness who testified before the commission.
According to South African Government News Agency, the commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels expressed approval for the announcement by the South African Police Service (SAPS) regarding the arrest of a suspect connected to the killing of Marius van der Merwe. Van der Merwe, who testified as 'Witness D' on 14 November 2025, was assassinated on 5 December 2025. His testimony was instrumental in uncovering allegations of wrongdoing within the City of Ekurhuleni and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).
The commission emphasized the importance of law enforcement agencies delivering justice for the families of those affected by individuals trying to avoid accountability for alleged criminal acts. Michaels urged these agencies to uphold justice in light of the developments.
The Madlanga Commission was formed to investigate criminality, political interference, and corruption within South Africa's criminal justice system. Under the leadership of Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, the commission examines claims of misconduct and illegal influence impacting law enforcement bodies.
Van der Merwe's testimony played a crucial role in revealing alleged corruption and irregularities linked to municipal structures in Ekurhuleni. His murder shortly after testifying raised concerns about witness safety and efforts to expose corruption and criminal networks within public institutions.
