Majodina Pledges Quarterly Visits to Monitor R19.7 Billion Water Project

Lephalale:Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina has announced her commitment to conduct quarterly oversight visits to the R19.7 billion Mokolo-Crocodile Water Augmentation Project Phase 2A (MCWAP-2A). These visits are intended to ensure the project is completed on schedule and within its allocated budget.

According to South African Government News Agency, Majodina made this commitment during an oversight visit organized by the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) in Lephalale and Thabazimbi, Limpopo. The visit, held on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, was aimed at evaluating progress on the strategic water infrastructure project, which is crucial for enhancing long-term water security and supporting economic and industrial development in the Waterberg District.

Majodina was joined by Deputy Minister David Mahlobo and Limpopo Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) MEC, Pule Shayi. During her visit, she acknowledged the TCTA's significant contributions to water infrastructure development over its 40-year history, particularly its financing role in Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.

TCTA Board Chairperson Precious Sibiya emphasized the importance of MCWAP-2A among other critical water infrastructure projects. She noted that the project is essential for meeting the water requirements of flue gas desulphurisation systems at Eskom's Medupi Power Station, a key condition set by the World Bank for financing. Sibiya also mentioned the project's role in South Africa's long-term water security strategy, especially in the Limpopo Province.

The oversight visit provided a platform for discussions on water infrastructure development and the collaboration between national and local governments to address water and sanitation challenges. MCWAP-2A aims to transfer raw water via a 140-kilometre pipeline from the Crocodile River to Lephalale, benefiting major users like Eskom's power stations and Exxaro's Grootegeluk mine, while bolstering the Waterberg District Municipality's water infrastructure.
