Malawi Hands Over SADC Organ Troika Chair to Eswatini with Call for Peaceful Implementation

Pretoria: Malawi has called on Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states to remain united in implementing decisions taken to strengthen peace, security, constitutional order, and democratic governance, as it handed over the chairship of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation to the Kingdom of Eswatini. According to South African Government News Agency, closing the SADC Organ Troika Summit in Durban on Sunday, Malawi's Second Vice President, Right Honourable Enoch Kanzingeni Chihana, stated that the recommendations adopted at the meeting would provide strategic guidance as the region works to address its peace and security challenges. He emphasized the importance of translating the decisions made at the summit into actionable outcomes for the benefit of the Southern African Community. Chihana also expressed confidence in Eswatini's ability to lead the Organ, acknowledging the Kingdom's readiness to take on leadership responsibilities. He praised Eswatini for its acti ve role in SADC's peace and security architecture, including its leadership of a SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to Malawi after the country's General Elections. Reflecting on Malawi's tenure, Chihana recalled that Eswatini had stepped in to head SEOM missions in Malawi, Tanzania, and Seychelles during critical electoral periods. He expressed gratitude for Eswatini's cooperation and collaboration during Malawi's chairship of the Organ. Additionally, Chihana commended Tanzania for its significant contributions during its three-year tenure as a member of the Troika, particularly during challenging times marked by security situations in Mozambique and eastern DRC. He highlighted Tanzania's leadership in SADC Electoral Observation Missions across the region. The outgoing chair noted that the Troika's discussions reaffirmed SADC's commitment to addressing regional challenges through dialogue, cooperation, and mutual solidarity, underscoring the bloc's dedication to promoting peace, security, democrati c governance, and stability. Chihana concluded by thanking the SADC Secretariat for its support and commending South Africa for facilitating the successful hosting of the meetings in Durban. With Eswatini now assuming the Chairship of the Organ Troika, the regional bloc aims to continue its efforts in advancing politics, defense, and security cooperation across Southern Africa.
