Man in court for counterfeit consignment

WESTERN CAPE: A 34-year-old Chinese National is expected to appear at the Cape Town Magistrates Court today, facing a charge of contravention with the Counterfeit Goods Act No. 37 of 1997.

This follows the South African Revenue Services’ (Customs team) swift response to information about a consignment of counterfeit goods arriving at the Table Bay Harbour on 22 October 2018. During a search, cartoons of Cigarette Rolling paper valued at R493 900 were seized and the matter was referred to the Hawks for further investigation.

He was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crimes Investigation team by means of a J175 subpoena on Friday, upon conducting further investigation.

In another separate matter, Siphokazi Bangani (24) and Sibaphiwe Nongenzi (30) appeared at the Cape Town Magistrates Court on 28 March. They were facing charges of contravention with the Counterfeit Goods Act No. 37 of 1997.

They were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crimes Investigation team by means of a J175 subpoena on 7 February 2019 upon conducting further investigation.

A joint Hawks’ team led by the South African Revenue Services (Customs) team swiftly acted on information about a consignment of counterfeit goods arriving at the Table Bay Harbour on 29 June and 27 September 2018 respectively.

During a search several GAP baby clothing worth R150 00 were seized on 29 June whilst ‘Givenchy’ tracksuits and ‘Louis Vuitton’ tops and pants all to the total value exceeding R300 000 were seized on 27 September last year.

The case against Bangani was remanded to the 17 May, whilst Nongenzi will on 20 May be back in court.
