Man sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for raping a minor

Itsoseng Regional Court sentenced Petrus Dila (44) to fifteen years imprisonment for raping a 16-year old minor on Thursday, 26 July 2018.

Dila’s sentencing comes after the police in Itsoseng arrested him on Tuesday, 19 December 2015 after a successful investigation was conducted. It was reported that the minor was attending a wedding with her friends in Bodibe village, near Itsoseng, and she decided to visit her grandmother. On her way, she was confronted by the accused who forcefully grabbed her, took out a knife, threatened her with it and then raped her.

During the sentencing, Dila was declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000). The court also ordered that his particulars be included in the National Register for Sex Offenders in terms of Section 49 and 50(2) of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences & Related Matters Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No. 32 of 2007).

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, commended the detectives in Itsoseng for ensuring this successful prosecution. She further added that crimes against women and children will not be tolerated. The Police will not stop to work hard until all women and children are and feel safe, said Lieutenant General Motswenyane.
