Man who killed meter-taxi driver, nabbed with illegal firearm

DURBAN – A multi-disciplinary operation was held yesterday in the Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas.

The operation resulted in the arrest of a 35-year-old man who was wanted for charges of murder and carjacking. During his arrest, the suspect was found in possession of an illegal firearm with 17 rounds of ammunition. The recovered firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing. The suspect is appearing before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court today.

It is alleged that on 29 April 2021 at 02:55, a meter taxi driver was robbed of his vehicle whilst he was Hanniville in the Mountain Rise policing precinct. The victim was also shot multiple times on the body and was declared dead at the scene. The deceased was identified as Nkululeko Freedom Jili (50).
