Manenberg Police members arrest two suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition

CAPE TOWN – On Monday, 15 March 2021, at 10:30, a 26-year-old male was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Manenberg SAPS detectives, whilst out on investigation, noticed the 26-year-old suspect walking in Ganubie Road. When the suspect saw the unmarked police vehicle he started to run in an effort to evade the SAPS members. The detectives apprehended the suspect and found him to be in possession of a pistol with the serial number removed, as well as five rounds of ammunition.

Upon further investigation, the Manenberg SAPS detectives profiled the suspect and established that the suspect was out on parole for a similar charge of possession of firearm and ammunition. The 26-year-old male’s parole will immediately be revoked. The suspect was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and once charged, he will appear in Athlone Magistrate’s Court. Those out on parole who contravene their parole conditions will be apprehended.

In an unrelated matter, a 28-year-old male was arrested during a stop and search operation held on Monday, 15 March 2021, at 13:45 on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of prohibited firearm and possession of drugs.

Meanwhile Manenberg SAPS Crime Prevention Unit has intensified its high-density patrols within gang hotspot areas. Upon their arrival at Joyce Court they saw a male acting suspiciously who subsequently attempted to evade SAPS members by running away. Members gave chase and apprehended the suspect who was found to be in possession of a 9mm Taurus Pistol and eleven 9mm rounds of ammunition, 17 units of whoonga, crushed mandrax and dagga. The serial number of the firearm was partially removed.

The suspect is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once charged.

The Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the members for their swift action, and expressed his satisfaction that these criminals were stopped in their tracks from committing more crimes.
