Manenberg SAPS detectives are winning the war against Gangs

The members of the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit at SAPS Manenberg have proved that dedication and perseverance pay off, after the high priority they placed on their investigations into gang-related murders in the Manenberg area.

On 27 April 2016 at 20:10, the 27-year-old Ashley Davids, who was a member of a local gang, was walking in the area with his girlfriend, when two men known to him approached them. As they got closer, without any warning, Nizaam Jordaan pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at Ashley. He was hit in the chest, and he died on the scene. Both men then fled the scene on foot. A murder case was registered for investigation. Detectives attached to the Manenberg SAPS Serious Violent Crimes Unit received the docket and immediately started working on the case. Their sterling investigation led to the arrest of the two suspects, who were brought before court.

Nizaam Jordaan, aged 25 years, was found guilty in the Cape Town High court on 7 February 2018, on a charge of murder. He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, 8 years for the possession of a firearm and 4 years for the possession of ammunition. The possession of a firearm and ammunition sentences will run concurrently, which means that Nizaam Jordaan will serve an effective sentence of 24 years imprisonment.

The other suspect, 28-year-old Rozario Lottering, was also found guilty of murder in the Cape Town High Court on the 7 February 2018 and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Both men are members of the Clever Kids gang.

In a separate, but also gang-related incident, 36 year old Shalomodien Dollie was found guilty in the Cape Town High Court and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for attempted murder and 5 years for the unlawful possession of a firearm. He also received a two year sentence for the unlawful possession of ammunition.

The possession of firearm and ammunition sentences will run concurrently, which means that Shalomodien Dollie will serve an effective sentence of 7 years imprisonment for the attempted murder of a 14 year old youth and an 18 year old man. Both suffered minor injuries after shots were fired on them on 24 December 2015, at 23:00, in Ghamka Street, Manenberg.

These detectives, who worked tirelessly on investigating the criminal conduct of the perpetrators, ensured their convictions and removed them from the streets of Manenberg for a long time.
