A group of learners became the first representatives from the Delft secondary school to experience the youth camp initiative, started seven years ago as a Metro Police social crime prevention initiative.
The City of Cape Town’s Metro Police Department hosted 31 learners from Masibambisane Secondary School at a Leadership Camp during the weekend of 7 9 February 2020.
This was the sixth camp for the financial year, and the first time that learners from this school participated.
By the end of June, the Metro Police Department will have hosted 480 learners over a 12-month period.
The Metro Police youth camps aim to inspire young people to think differently about life, and their place in the world, and to instil a sense of responsible citizenship. Young people are one of our most vulnerable groups, and that is why we started the camps.
Through interactive play and awareness sessions, we try to get attendees to think about what it takes to be a leader and what kind of skills can help them get there, but we also talk about the tough issues like teen pregnancy, substance abuse, gangsterism and other issues that our young people grapple with.
The City of Cape Town and the Metro Police Department see immense value and potential in our youth. You are ambassadors for the city and future leaders in our society, and that is why we are trying to do our bit to help advance our young people.
To the group of learners who participated in the camp, I hope that you learnt a lot, but more importantly, that you had fun doing it.
I hope that you will tell all of your friends and relatives about it and inspire others to want to come and join us on such a leadership camp in the future.
Thank you to the Principal too for the vote of confidence in our programme. He came to visit the camp over the weekend and was suitably impressed by what he witnessed.
And that is why I am here today, to hand out certificates of attendance and appreciation to the group who flew the Masibambisane flag high at their first Metro Police youth camp.
We hope that this is the beginning of a wonderful relationship between the Department and the school.
