MEC Fikile Xasa on sentencing of Andile Lungisa

MEC Xasa sympathises with Councillor Lungisa

COGTA MEC Fikile Xasa has noted with regret the two-year direct imprisonment sentence against African National Congress (ANC) Councillor Andile Lungisa. Councillor Lungisa was found guilty by the Port Elizabeth Magistrate Court in April 2018 for an attack on the Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor Rano Kayser during a heated council meeting in the Metro in October 2016.

Mr Lungisa is the Councilor for the ANC in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. The sentence handed down was three years with one year suspended, implying an effective two years direct jail term.

MEC Xasa said the outcome of the court case is depressing and unfortunate and we respect the independence of the judiciary.

“We sympathise with Councillor Lungisa and his family during this difficult time. We trust that they will find courage and strength to confront the challenges that lie ahead of him,” said MEC Xasa.
