MEC Sefora Ntombela to host ward committees Imbizo and Oath Taking ceremony

MEC for Free State of Department of Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, Hon. SH Ntombela together with Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Leaders, Hon Des Van Rooyen and Free State Premier, Hon E.S Magashule will host the ward committees Imbizo and Oath taking ceremony

Municipal Structures Act (Act 33 of 2000 as amended) makes it mandatory for all local municipalities to establish wall to wall ward committees. To this effect, since August 2016 Local Government Elections, most municipalities in the province have established their ward committees. The objective of ward committees is to enhance participatory democracy in Local Government and to make recommendations on any matter affecting wards to ward councilors or through ward councilors to the Speakers.

Ward committees were also supported to develop ward operational plans. The plans are to ensure the provision of enabling environment for participation in planning, implementation and monitoring of service delivery at ward level. The Ward Operational Plans further assist with practical implementation of a well-planned, resourced and structured participation programme and improved accountability of ward committees,

It is against this backdrop that an Imbizo is convened with ward committees to give recognition of the valuable contribution they make to Local Government participatory democracy. Honourable Executive Mayors/Mayors and Speakers will grace the event.
