Pretoria: Deputy Minister in The Presidency Kenny Morolong and Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba will on Tuesday lead the Limpopo launch of the Milestones of Freedom campaign at the University of Limpopo, Turfloop Campus. The campaign commemorates significant milestones in South Africa's democratic history, including 30 Years of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising, 60 years since the District Six forced removals, and 70 years since the 1956 Women's March.

According to South African Government News Agency, the campaign, held under the theme 'Honouring the Past. Delivering the Future', aims to connect South Africa's history of resistance, sacrifice, and struggle with the responsibilities of the present generation, while reflecting on the progress made since the advent of democracy. The campaign has already been launched in other provinces including the Free State, Western Cape, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and Northern Cape.

The University of Limpopo was chosen for the provincial launch due to its significant history of student activism, political consciousness, and resistance to apartheid. Known in the past as the University of the North, it was a pivotal center for student mobilization and resistance, where generations of students contributed to the broader liberation struggle. The launch will also emphasize the legacy of student activism in Limpopo, highlighting contributions from figures such as former University of the North SRC President Onkgopotse Abram Tiro, and the role of schools like Hwiti High School in the 1976 student uprisings.

As part of the program, former students and participants in the struggle are expected to share their experiences, linking individual memories and acts of resistance to the broader history of the University of Limpopo and South Africa's liberation struggle, stated The Presidency on Sunday.
