Kempton park: Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has paid tribute to race driver Robert Wolk following his death. In a statement issued on Saturday, McKenzie expressed shock and sadness at the news that the 41-year-old was shot and killed in an alleged road-rage incident in Kempton Park, Gauteng, on Wednesday, 16 September 2026.

According to South African Government News Agency, McKenzie described Wolk as a champion in every sense, highlighting his contributions to South African motorsport across various disciplines. McKenzie emphasized the tragedy of losing such a prominent sports figure to senseless violence, underscoring the need for safer roads for all South Africans.

Robert Wolk was recognized as one of South Africa's most accomplished motorsport competitors, with a career spanning nearly three decades. He earned several prestigious titles, including the SA Formula Volkswagen champion in 2013, Formula 1600 champion in 2015, and back-to-back SA GTC champion in 2021 and 2022. In 2024, he was crowned SA Touring Cars champion. Earlier this year, Wolk claimed his second Simola Hillclimb 'King of the Hill' title.

McKenzie noted that Wolk had represented South Africa with distinction, earning both Junior and Senior Protea Colours for motorsport. He conveyed his condolences to Wolk's family, friends, and the broader motorsport community, while also expressing support for the ongoing investigation by the South African Police Service into the circumstances surrounding Wolk's death.
