Minister meets with university chancellors

Higher Education and Training Minister, Blade Nzimande, is expected to meet with university chancellors today to discuss the issues of fees and registrations at the country’s tertiary institutions.

Minister Nzimande will during the meeting get reports from the university chancellors on how they are handling the registrations and what can been done to address the challenges they are facing, said the department’s spokesperson Khaye Nkwanyana.

“Mostly, [the Minister] will emphasise government’s instruction that students who are owing fees should be allowed to register and cannot be turned back by institutions,” said Nkwanyana.

He said 71 000 students who fell under the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) owed money to institutions and some of them will be graduating this year.

“All those students, who were owing, should be allowed to register. The Minister will also get an assurance that this academic year will not be disturbed,” Nkwanyana said. –
