Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula attends 75th commemoration of the Battle of El Alamein in Egypt, 21 Oct

On Saturday, October 21, 2017, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms. Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will represent South Africa at the 75th anniversary commemorations of the Battle of El Alamein, fought in the northwestern coast of Egypt in 1942.

The Battle of El Alamein was a significant battle of the Second World War, and marked the peak of the North African campaign between the forces of the British Empire and the GermanItalian army.

As part of the 75th anniversary, Egypt will host various memorial activities including a ceremony to honour those who died in the battle and an official unveiling of Alamein City, a new eco-city mega project expected to boost the Egyptian economy.

A number of defence ministers and senior officials, particularly from countries that participated in the battle are expected to join President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in the Diamond Jubilee revelries.
