Minister Siyabonga Cwele visits North West for broadband infrastructure assessment

The Telecommunications and Postal Services Minister, Honourable Siyabonga Cwele spent last week in the North West province to assess the state of broadband infrastructure as government plans to increasingly use information technology to provide services that improve the lives of the ordinary people within the province.

Broadband is fast, reliable, always available and secure internet. The mandate of the Telecommunications and Postal Services Department is to ensure that information technology improves service delivery to the people and to improve the postal services.

The department plans to open the networks to reach even the small towns in the rural areas. The government is on the verge of transforming and becoming an E-government in which it will harnesses the services of internet. The civil servants in the near future will have to transform due to the modern ways of communication. The modern society will not need to use paper but to rely on ICT because it makes work to be easy.

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District is one of the 8 districts identified by the Republic of South Africa, President Jacob Zuma for the roll out of broadband which will be fast and secured.

Minister Cwele visited different sites in the district as to check whether they were internet connected or not and was accompanied by MEC Maphefo Matsemela and the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Executive Mayor, Councillor Pinkie Moloi.

“The department together with provinces will work together to ensure that proper plans are in place to expand information technology infrastructure. Dr Kenneth Kaunda is one of the 8 districts identified whereby intensive broadband will be rolled out. In 2019 the department need to connect all government buildings in the country”, said Minister Cwele.

MEC Matsemela expressed her disappointment on the act of criminals who continues to steal copper cables that are going to school. She mentioned that such an activity has a negative impact towards the delivery of quality learning to the learners.

Kebonang Secondary School in Mmabatho received a cyber-lab with 40 computers plus a server, printer, and an interactive white board which is a similar infrastructure to the one rolled out in the Gauteng province.
