More suspects nabbed during operation Vala in Durban CBD

In the fight against crime in the province, a multi-disciplinary operation was put in place yesterday morning in Durban.

The operation comprised of various units in the SAPS, Metro Police, Home Affairs, Department of Labour and other stake holders. The operation was conducted at various areas in the Durban CBD. Illegal posters were removed and the team also checked for compliance in terms of the Disaster Management Act as well as non-compliance of the municipal by-laws.

The operation was also joined by the Acting MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Kwazi Mshengu, Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thulani Gonya and his management. The Durban District Commander Major General Vukani Mgobhozi was also part of the operation. The operation yielded good results and two suspects were found with illegal possession of firearms. They were placed under arrest for being in illegal possession of firearms.

The operation also focused on preventing robberies in the CBD. The successes were achieved during the operation includes 16 suspects who were arrested for various crimes such as possession of drugs, second hand goods act, possession of stolen property, counterfeit goods as well as Disaster Management Act.

A total 32 fines were issued for offences such as trading without a permit, failing to comply with police instructions and other offences. A total of 49 bags of goods were seized by police during the operation.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya praised and thanked all the role-players that were part of the operation. “These operations will be on-going in the Durban CBD,” he added.
