Johannesburg: The Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, is set to lead the Western Cape launch of the Milestones of Freedom Campaign from 11 to 12 August 2026. The event will be held in Cape Town, in collaboration with provincial and local government officials.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Western Cape segment of the campaign follows successful launches in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and the Northern Cape. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to commemorate the key milestones in South Africa's democratic journey. The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) has highlighted that the campaign is being celebrated with a year-long program under the theme: 'Honouring the Past. Delivering the Future.'

The campaign's objective is to foster social cohesion, inspire national pride, and encourage reflection on South Africa's path to democracy by spotlighting significant milestones the country is commemorating this year. On Tuesday, Deputy Minister Morolong will visit the Truter family in Bonteheuwel before leading a wreath-laying ceremony at Maitland Cemetery.

Christopher Truter was one of the first students from Cape Town's coloured communities to be killed by apartheid police during the 1976 student uprisings. His death marked the expansion of youth resistance beyond Soweto to other communities in the Western Cape, as reported by the GCIS.

In addition to this, the Deputy Minister will visit the Mosie family and then proceed to Maitland Cemetery to honor Xolile Mosie, another victim of the 1976 student uprisings in Langa. This ceremony underscores the government's dedication to preserving the memory of those who sacrificed for South Africa's freedom and democracy.

Later in the day, government leaders will gather at Langa Secondary School for the unveiling of the Pond of Reflection and the lighting of the Torch of Freedom. These acts are in recognition of the nation's democratic milestones.
