Movie Industry Makes Strides

The movie industry in Botswana has seen growth in recent years.
Botswood, a television production company, continues to make strides in the industry as it recently produced a worth watching short film dubbed Mpho le Mphonyana.
The company has so far produced movies such as Ya le nna Nigeria part one and two and Beauty part one, Matsale, Pelo e ja Serati and Lepodisi la Sephiri among others. The latest offering, Mpho le Mphonyana premiered at Thapong Visual Arts Centre over the weekend.
Producer, Fenny Lekolwane said their journey in the industry dated back as far as 2002, when they produced Botswana’s first television drama titled Flat 101. They later produced a 13 episode drama Definitions which currently plays on BTV every Wednesday.
A series of productions then followed with years, which Fenny said played on BTV, Magic World and African Magic. The producer said in an endeavour to expand, they embarked on some benchmarking exercise in South Africa at Sasani studios which houses popular soapies Rhythm City and Scandal.
She said they also conducted workshops, such as the recent one where Botswood actors were trained by former Generations and Zone 14 actress, Kgomotso Ditshwene.
“Ditshwene trained 63 of our actors and we are now organising another training with her and Sello Maake at the end of the year. We are going to invite casting agencies from South Africa to come and scout for talent during training,” said Fenny.
She said one of Botswood actors was doing well in South Africa’s 7 de Laan, where it all started with her attending the workshops.
