Pretoria: The National Treasury has announced the deferral of the fiscal strategy public engagement on the 2027 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to October. This adjustment is intended to align the engagement with the launch of the Fiscal Outreach campaign.
According to South African Government News Agency, the workshop was initially planned for July/August 2026, as per the guidelines provided in the 2027 MTEF. The decision to postpone was made to synchronize the session with the fiscal outreach programme, set to commence following the tabling of the 2026 Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS).
The National Treasury highlighted that rescheduling the session to follow the MTBPS will enable attendees to discuss the medium-term fiscal strategy for the 2027 MTEF, alongside the proposed 2026 Adjusted Fiscal Framework. The department emphasized that this timing aligns with the Fiscal Outreach Programme launch, while ensuring the Budget calendar remains unaffected by this postponement.
The postponement will not impact any other Cabinet-approved milestones for the 2027 MTEF. These include recommendations from the Technical Committee on the Budget (TCB) to the Ministers' Committee on the Budget (MINCOMBUD), as well as Budget Council and Budget Forum meetings. The official tabling of the MTBPS is scheduled for 21 October 2026.
Details regarding workshop logistics and registration will be made available on the National Treasury website upon finalization.
